*Spalting is the term given to unique colouration and patterns on the wood surface caused by fungi in dead or stressed trees. The black lines are caused by competing fungi species trying to grab their share of the wood! The fungi are killed by the kilning process and won't infect your home!
Oak is the traditional wood to use around your fireplace or stove largely due to its abundance but we think there are better alternatives worth considering:
- Elm has an interesting contorted grain that creates swirling patterns in the wood. It often features burrs or pippy cat-paw like markings caused by failed branches and buds. A warm and richly coloured wood.
- Ash in it's olive brown form or spalted* beech are also worth considering if you want a lighter coloured wood with attractive colour variations.
