Customised or custom made furniture – what’s the difference? 

Customised furniture starts by taking one of our existing products such as a live edge wood and steel leg table and changing or customising one or more aspects of its design to suit your space and style preferences, for example: 
  • The standard leg sizes are fine but you would like a different colour
  • The live edge wood you really like is not quite the right size and needs altered in some way
 
​Custom made furniture  starts with an idea, a sketch or a picture of something you really like. We are happy to work with your ideas and budget, make suggestions for you to consider and provide drawings and quotes for approval. 
We will design your furniture on a workbench and may make a model where we feel it helps to better convey the function and appearance of the item. If the model works and meets your approval then that’s great and if it doesn’t then we can redesign it till it does!
  • If you want a live edge wood coffee table and need a shelf or drawers underneath then a custom made table will do just that.
  • Or perhaps you can see that beautiful wood in our shop as a stunning headboard then consider it done.  
 When you choose custom made furniture all aspects of its size, style, form and function can be made just how you want it, in your space to your specification.

Custom designed coffee table - a worked example

Brief: Design a unique coffee table inspired by the surfing and coastal lifestyle.  Simple form, clean lines and a sense of movement,  

​A classic surfing wave conveys power, grace and motion.  The profile suggests potential for a pedestal type base for the table. 


​
A profile template was produced and marked out on a thick slab of walnut, saved from a firewood pile.
The wave outline was carved using chainsaws and other tools to create the smoothed surfaces.
​The light coloured flecks on the wood resemble the foaming wave lip.
A surfboard uses one or more fins for steering control and grip. 

Note the attention to detail as the Ash wood grain follows the profile of the fin.
