Live Edge Boards - Epoxy River Tables

River tables are very popular at present and almost everyone is making them or wanting to make one. They were made popular by Greg Klassen who creates 'River Collection' tables and other furniture with a river of glass between planks of live edge wood.

However working with glass and wood requires a high degree of skill and craftsmanship that can't be learned overnight so people use epoxy resin to pour the river.

​Creating an epoxy river table involves a great deal of work and the resin is very expensive - don't waste your effort and money using wood that is not kiln-dried.  That cheap slab on Facebook or ebay might be tempting but if it's not dry enough your project will fail. Demand for live edge wood is high and kiln drying takes time and money so at best the advert may state air-dried or seasoned.  ​​The extra cost of kiln-dried wood is insignificant compared to the cost of resin!.
 
What's the worst that can happen?
  • The epoxy might not set or cure properly, creating a sticky mess
  • The resin may react with moisture and go cloudy
  • The wood will continue to shrink as it dries and may warp, split or separate from the resin
