Sometimes the organic form of the wood is enough and can be presented with minimal intervention or it can be worked into an abstract sculpture far removed from its origins.

A sculptural element can create an attractive focal point in your room whether its a standalone sculpture or a or placed as an accent feature on a wall.

We are also undertake commissioned work if you are looking for a unique sculpture for your home or workplace. Perhaps you have ideas of your own that I can work with or I can suggest suitable themes based on your interests and lifestyle.
  • We can arrange a visit to your home or workplace which helps me to develop a sculpture that has a sense of place and is the right scale and style.
  • I will produce outline sketches for your appraisal or revision, together with a written quote. 
  • A scale model may be produced where I feel it would help your appraisal of the proposed sculpture. 
  • If you don't like our proposal or revisions then we are happy to recommend other local artists to help you realise your vision.

'Out of darkness'

​.'Out of Darkness' is a unique and rarely found root ball burr sculpture that records the origins and unseen growth of the tree below ground. A tangle of roots encircle the growth before the tree emerges into the light.

The natural patina on the wood in places resembles the leathery skin of the Tollund man found in a Danish peat bog.

Provenance
It was discovered by chance when a storm blew over a dead-standing Ash tree near St Marks and lifted the root out of the ground. Careful removal of the clay exposed the burr to the light for the first time.

Layers of clay and small stones were removed using small tools and brushes to reveal and preserve as much of the natural growth as possible. The 'shoot' was shaped using what little solid wood of the trunk remained.

Mounted on a phosphor bronze pedestal above an American Black walnut plinth, approximately 80cm tall and 40cm wide.
